For
decades our industry has relied on timesheets and various charge out rates
to calculate its bills. Many years ago I recognised that this method
carried two major flaws firstly the client would never know what the work
was going to cost until after it was done and secondly clients were not
interested in how long something took, they just wanted to know the price.
I
therefore instigated fixed fee quotes for most of the work that we did
however time billing has remained for new or complex work or where
information was received late/incomplete meaning that we or the client would
be at risk if we tried to quote for something we were unable to gauge.
This
mix of methods causes us a great deal of unnecessary administration, plus it
still doesn't make sense to bill purely on a time basis, consequently,
with effect from 1 April 2008 we are doing away with timesheets and will
move over to quoting for all work we do. On balance we will now take
the risk of not charging adequately for some of the work mentioned above,
however we will save in administration plus it will give us all certainty
over the fees we charge.
Another key benefit to clients is that the "ticking clock" will disappear,
ie clients can speak to us at any time about anything without the fear of
extra charges.
